Back to Basics Living Summit Thursday highlights

day five

Today was the final day for the Back to Basics Living Summit and there were 8 presenters.  Being short on time today, I was almost relieved to see that I wasn’t really interested in all the courses.  I did view 3 and was pleased with all three.

Making Herbal Medicine

The presenter was a vet, so he’s tried hiss herbal remedies on the furrykind with great success.  However, he did start his presentation with quite a disclaimer.   Be that as it may, he actually didn’t give any herbal medicine recipes in the video.  He did provide some good pointers for harvesting and preserving.  He talked about making teas, decoctions, cold infusions, tinctures, glycerites, oil infusions, pills, and poultices.

Introduction to Preserving Herbs for Winter Use

This woman talked exclusively about different ways to preserve herbs (as the name of the course implies). Being off-grid and old-school myself, I tend to go for the old-fashioned hanging to dry method. She demonstrated a really nice hanging dryer that I’m putting on my wish list. She also talked about making herb butter, seasonings, teas, jellies, layering in salt or sugar, and freezing.

Jump Start Your Urban Farm

This was my favorite for today, although he didn’t score very well in the voting polls.  Before getting down to the nitty-gritty of how-to start your urban farm, he talked a bit about how he arrived at this point.  His total transformation was reading the book Ishmael by Daniel Quinn in the 1990s. SAME HERE BABY!  For me, it changed my understanding of my place in the world.  So, since the presenter and I shared this life-transforming experience, I was all ears.  Of course, the main focus was on permaculture, working with nature instead of against her.  He had some basic gardening suggestions and showcased his own urban food production compound.

I did not watch Discover the Benefits and Simplicity of Thermal Cooking, From Consumer to Producer–Producing Value and Income in your Household, Getting Back to the Basics for Fat Loss, Top Tips on Buying Off-Grid Property and Setting Up a Successful Homestead (the #1 for today), or Your Custom-made Food Storage Planner in 13 Guided Steps.

I hope you enjoyed the highlights as much as I enjoyed viewing these FREE presentations!

Friday and Saturday are Encore Days.  The presentations for each day that received the most votes will be replayed.  I don’t have the complete schedule, but I’m pretty darn sure some of my favorites will be in the lineup!  If you want to purchase full and unlimited access, you can do so here.

Back to Basics Living Summit Wednesday Highlights

day four

A good mix of Prepper / Homesteading presentations today!

Getting Started With a Solar Generator

As I’m still working on self-education regarding solar, this was a good video for me. However, I don’t want to make my own generator, so all that calculating went over my head.  I did get confirmation that solar is the way to go for what we plan on using it for and I learned that you can charge things with a USB cable on DC rather than AC electricity.

Physical Fitness and Self Defense Preparedness

This presenter is the author of several post apocalyptic fiction novels and a martial arts expert. She’s pretty tough.  I think I’d like her to be part of my bug-out team in the event of the end of the world.  Did you know that one of the best mental training activities is walking briskly over uneven terrain for 10 minutes?  Fortunately for me, La Yacata is all uneven terrain, so I’m doing pretty well in my pre-apocalyptic training program.

Year Around Gardening

This was a longish video since the presenter highlighted the best crops for year around gardening by planting zones. For our neck of the woods, (or rather desert), there weren’t too many take aways that were actually useful. Disappointing.

Making Mead

This guy had the smoothest voice.  He was all about making his own herbal, healthy beer in the form of mead.  Not that I’m going to be making mead anytime soon, but I loved listening to him.  Apparently, I wasn’t the only one who was into this guy.  His video presentation came in #1 for today.

I did not get a chance to view Practical Guide to Using Mylar Bags for Your Long Term Food Storage or Keeping Backyard Livestock.  Phooey.  Tomorrow there are 8 presenters!  I’ll have to start earlier I think.

If you want to purchase full and unlimited access, you can do so here.

Back to Basics Living Summit Tuesday Highlights

day three

Tuesday was my favorite summit lineup so far. It had a more homesteader rather that prepper focus.

How to Embrace on Off-Grid Lifestyle

This presentation was awesome!  She talked about her own off-grid experience.  She has a smokehouse, a sun oven, a fenced in raised bed garden, 16 solar panels, led lights, animals and a porch swing on her property.  She also clarified that there are several ways to off-grid, not just our own personal no electricity, no generator, no solar panels.

Seed Saving Hacked

Not only did this guy warn us all about the danger of Monsanto and their control of the world’s seed supply, but he also showed a step by step way to harvest seeds from tomatoes.  I’ll be trying this out for sure!  This was the #1 rated presentation today.

Starting a Homestead from Scratch

Another good one, but a little basic for where we are in our homesteading adventure. Things to consider when homesteading include your health, what you eat, whether you are prepared for meat production, and the space that you have.

I did not get a chance to view Maple Joy in 8 Steps From Tree to Syrup, How to Generate Income Doing What You Love, or Natural Skincare for Families.  Drat!

If you want to purchase full and unlimited access, you can do so here.  I’ve also heard rumors of encore days over the weekend.  I’m not exactly sure what that will entail, but I’ll keep you posted.
